What To Do??

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Stuck indoors with a 4,5,6,7,8 year old? Have you already tried all the activities that fill Facebook these days?Perhaps it's time for a different approach.

Meet Thomas, the Ultimate Indoor Survivor.

Thomas: "I remember that when I was 3, I had a sort of zen-garden serenity."

He did indeed.

Thomas is a very very happy stayhome-er. To the point where I get worried. He does not even comprehend the concept of cabin fever. He feels at liberty (strangely) to discover the whole world from the safety of his home.

To be honest, as you will see below, some of the best projects in his life happened within these walls. Because where else would he find the resources to make his ideas real? I was his best resource and he used me well.

Being a normal mother, I had doubts. Am I doing the right thing? Should I do more? I am sure all of you out there feel the same. But I tell you what: looking back at these pictures I can safely tell you that I put in all my time, energy and attention. I was in lockdown for 12 years, my friends. I have experience, I can tell you.

Helping him transform his ideas into reality was really, really important. Vital in fact. It validated him and made him stable and happy. (Also, by the way, his ideas were pretty funny).

Like for example he wanted to be the Statue of Liberty. Not dress up like. But BE. Yes, that happened. All I did was to help him with the crown and then document this for the future generations. He stayed like that for a while. He got tired.

The devil is in the details. Please note the notebook in his hand.

The parks were more a source of anxiety than of fun, adventure or pleasure. He wanted to have a picnic once. But of course, NOT in the park. We had a lovely one in the living room. We had a pleasant conversation about the weather.

He broke my teapot by accident. We were sad together. It was a lovely teapot.

There was the News Anchor moment when he made me cut a hole in a cardboard box and then he presented the news. He then turned the box into a private TV set.

The same activity, different setting. It feels novel.

And then there were the pots and pans, the alchemy, the coffee mill and other kitchen paraphernalia.

He spent hours grinding that mill.

The lure of Chemistry.

Covid much? The gas mask was a must.

There was a Golden Antique Shop. I had to buy a few.

And then it was The London Souvenir Shop where I had to make a few.

Yes, I made all that.

We made little books...

.....and we made big books.

He made his own Apple computer.

And he typed a letter to his grandfather on a typewriter.

Dragă Relu...

You know what all these things are? Memories. We did all these things together, me and him. And we have the pictures to prove it.

Make your own scrapbook of this mad, crazy and unexpected indoor adventure. Let their imagination take lead and let the child play the way they want to.

One day soon it is them who will have to find solutions to impossible problems and they will have to think outside the box.

There is magic to be made at home and one day you will have the pictures to prove it. So stay home and discover the world.

If you think these or some of these activities are useful to other desperate parents, please share this article. If not, don't.
