Role play is very important for children. It stimulates creativity, sparks imagination, develops language and communication skills, as well as the social and emotional ones.
A toy magic wand is a wonderful, easy, simple toy you can make for your child. It is perfect for 3-5 year olds who get lost in their imagination. With a magic wand they will play for hours leaving you to sip your coffee and read the newspaper. As if.
Materials
Twig
Jute twine
Hot glue + hot glue gun
2 mm felt (one or two colours)
Polyfill (take some from an old cushion or pillow. You need very little, less than a handful.)
3-5 Sequins (for added sparkle)

Step 1
Find an attractive twig in the park. The straighter the better. It should be around 25-30 cm long. Wash it and let it dry.

Step 2
Use your hot glue gun and wrap it in jute twine. Leave the tip unwrapped (1-2 cm). Details of how it's done in the video tutorial.
Step 3
Trace the star template on two pieces of felt and cut them with a straight scissors. You can get the template here.

The template measures 12 x 16 cm.
Step 4
Add embellishments at this stage. If you want. Be creative. 3-5 sequins on each side for added sparkle. Sew the sequins by hand, securing them well in place for safety.

Step 5
Sew the two felt stars together by sewing machine or by hand. We sew on the right side of the felt.

Don't forget to leave an opening where the polyfill and the twig will go in.

Step 6
Fill the stars with polyfill. You can use a chopstick for this stage, to push the fill up those corners. The star has to get a little volume and shape.

Because you need very little polyfill, open the inside cover of a decorative cushion you already own and extract some out. Sew it back up. Nobody will ever know.
Step 7
Add plenty of hot glue at the end of the stick and introduce it inside. Be careful not to touch the outside of the star and leave traces of glue. It's a tricky stage, prepare for it.

Step 8
Push it as far in as it goes and press on both sides until the glue gets cold.
Step 9
Sew the opening around the stick by hand, using thin thread. Secure it well.

Step 10
Done. Well done!
